Court stops PDP convention

15 August 2016, 18:05

Abuja - Few hours after a Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State validated Wednesday's national convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), another Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the party to suspend the exercise, reports NewsDay.

The Abuja court presided over by Justice Okon Abang was ruling in the suit filed by the factional Chairman of the party Ali Modu Sheriff to determine who is the authentic Chairman of the party between him  and Senator Ahmed Makarfi.

The Makarfi faction is organising the convention in Port Harcourt but Sheriff is insisting the exercise be put on hold.

Sheriff is also insisting that the venue of the proposed convention be shifted from Port Harcourt to Abuja at a yet to be agreed date, reports News 24

Apart from his opposition to the choice of Port Harcourt, Sheriff also insisted that the ward, local government and state congresses already concluded and approved by the National Executive Committee (NEC) must stand.

Abang had in an earlier judgement sacked Makarfi as the National Chairman of the party.
