Court stops PDP national convention

Abuja -  A Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)  not to go ahead with its national convention scheduled to hold on August 17, reports Punch

The decision of the court presided over by Justice Abang follows a suit filled by the Ali Modu Sheriff-faction of the national leadership of party seekin to stop the convention from taking place.

Sheriff and eight others filed the suit on behalf of the Executive Committee/National Working Committee of the PDP.

Other former national officers listed in the suit according to New 24 are Prof. Wale Oladapo (National Secretary); Dennis Alonge-Niyi (Deputy National Youth Leader); Bashir Maidugu (Deputy National Legal Adviser); Hanatu Ulam (Deputy National Women Leader); Lawa Dutsima Anchi (Deputy National Auditor); Okey Nnadozie (Deputy National Organising Secretary) and OLisa Metuh (National Publicity Secretary).

The suit has only the Independent National Electoral Commission and the PDP as the defendants.

Justice Abang in his ruling on Thursday ordered the party to stop the convention pending the determination of a substantive suit filed by the applicants.

The plaintiffs had contended that that by virtue of the PDP’s Constitution, they must remain in office till 2018.
