Court upholds Sheriff’s removal as PDP chairman

04 July 2016, 16:19

Port Harcourt - A Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt on Monday upheld the removal of Senator Modu Sheriff as the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), reports Thisday.

The court declared the May 21 national convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) legal and that its decisions did not violate any known law or the constitution of the party.

Justice‎ Mohammed Liman, who delivered his judgement in a suit brought to the court by the National Caretaker Committee of the PDP dismissed all grounds of defence put up by former National Chairman of the party, Senator Modu Sheriff.

A similar court in Abuja had on Wednesday ordered Sheriff and other officers of the party to refrain from parading themselves in those capacities.

But, another Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to only recognise candidates endorsed by the Ali Modu Sheriff-led National Working Committee of the party for the governorship elections in Edo and Ondo States, reports News 24.

The ruling invariably invalidates any the primary elections organized by the Ahmed Makarfi-led faction.

With Monday's judgement, it is unclear which order INEC will obey.
