As it happened: INEC declares Obaseki winner of Edo governorship election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Godwin Obaseki of the All Progressives Congress (APC) the winner of the Edo governorship election.

The state returning officer of INEC Professor Kayode Soremekun announced Obaseki winner with a vote of 319,483 as against PDP's 253,173 pulled by Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu.

14: 15 - According to the results collated, Obaseki is leading rival Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

12:30 - After a one hour break, the official presentation has resumed.

9:15 - The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has warned the public to desist from publishing or believing election result published on social media, saying only the body has the right to announce the winner.

Benin - The collation of results for the Edo governorship election has reached advanced stage on Thursday.

INEC is expected to announce the final winner.

The two leading candidates in the Edo State governorship election, Godwin Obaseki of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are racing neck and neck as results of the poll began trickling in.
