FG's objection against Dasuki lacks merit

11 April 2016, 19:25

Abuja - Former National Security Advisor, Muhammed Sambo Dasuki was victorious at the Economic Community for West African States(ECOWAS) Court in the first leg of his court action, where he is challenging alleged unlawful arrest and detention without trial since December last year by the federal government, Vanguard reports.

Against the recommendation of the government, the court ruled that it was within their jurisdiction to rule on the matter, with it handing down a decision that the action against Dasuki infringed upon his basic fundamental rights. The court ruled that the alleged unlawful arrest and detention went against his rights to liberty and to own property.

The court added that this went against the constitution.

The court further stated that the objection from the government was frivolous and lacked merit. In addition it said that it was not the court's duty to rule on whether Dasuki was guilty, but whether his rights were infringed upon.
