Fresh crisis brews in PDP over plots to retain Sheriff as National Chairman

21 March 2016, 17:13

Abuja - A proposal by the South-west leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to cede the position of National Chairman to the North is already creating ripples within the party.

The leaders also proposed that the current National Chairman of the party, Ali Modu Sheriff should retain the position till 2019, when a new zoning formula would be announced to pave the way for a northern presidential candidate.

It was gathered that the South-west’s position was an orchestrated plot by some governors of the party to accommodate Sheriff in the forthcoming national convention or seek tenure extension for him.

Sources claimed that Ekiti State governor, Ayodele Fayose, who played a prominent role in Sheriff’s emergence, was the brain behind the position paper presented by the zone to the National Working Committee (NWC) of PDP.

It was learnt that the visit of the zone to Sheriff as well as the position of the group are already generating crisis within the zone, as most of the party leaders in the zone had kicked against the visit, which they said was personal agenda of some party chieftains in the zone.
