INEC declares Yahaya Bello winner of Kogi election

06 December 2015, 06:26

Lokoja - The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Yahaya Bello of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as winner of the governorship election in Kogi state.

Bello defeated the incumbent Governor, Idris Wada, who is the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) candidate in the election.

Wada failed to cover grounds in Saturday's supplementary election as the APC extended the 41 353 vote lead recorded on November 21.

According to Professor Emmanuel Kucha, the Returning Officer for the election, the APC’s candidate polled 247 752 while Wada garnered 204 877 votes.

Bello replaced Abubakar Audu, the original candidate of the APC, who died on November 22, same day the election was declared inconclusive by INEC.

The commission ordered fresh election in 91 polling units spread across 19 local governments.

The councils are Adavi, Ajaokuta, Ankpa, Bassa, Dekina, Ibaji, Ida, Igala-Mela, Okehi, Odohun, Ijimu, Kabba/Bunu, Lokoja, Ofu, Olamaboro, Okene, Omala and Yagba West and Kogi Kodokafi.
