INEC transfers Rivers REC, others

21 December 2015, 14:29

Port Harcourt - The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmud Yakubu has ordered the transfer of top officials of the commission in Rivers State, reports The Nation.

The transfer of the officials might not be unconnected with the upcoming fresh governorship election in the state, which was ordered by the election tribunal and the Court of Appeal.

The affected officials include the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Dame Gesila Khan, and other senior officers of the commission, who allegedly compromised the processes during the March 28 and April 11 elections in favour of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The decision to transfer the official follows the embarrassing revelations from the tribunal and Courts of Appeal on the sham and massively-rigged elections in the state.

Khan has, however, continued to deny any wrongdoing during the 2015 general elections.

She described her present travails as part of the propaganda of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to discredit her.
