The two leading candidates in the Edo State governorship election, Godwin Obaseki of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are racing neck and neck as results of the poll began trickling in

Collation of the results is expected to go into the night and a clearer picture is expected to emerge on Thursday.

Hoodlums destroy ballot box in PU12/12/01/027, Uyiosa Pry Sch, Oredo

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, John Odigie Oyegun, has lost his unit to the Peoples Democratic Party, in the ongoing Edo state gubernatorial election.

Oyegun who voted at Oredo Ward 2, Unit 1, has not won election for his party in the unit since joining the APC.

The returning officer of Independent National Electoral Commission, while announcing results from the Unit, said the APC scored 69 votes, while the PDP scored 78 votes.

With voting and counting already concluded in some polling units, many of our readers in Edo State have sent in the results from their polling units

14;00 Voting has ended in some of the polling units.

Counting of votes has already begun

12:30  Thugs have attacked some election observers who tried to take pictures of some the the irregularities they observed when monitoring the election in Unit 26 and 27 at Iduenbo Ward, Orhiowon Local Government Area.

As they tried to take pictures, the thugs assailed them, but they fled in their vehicle unwittingly leaving one of them behind.

The thugs pursued them until they got to Iguododo.

They were rescued by officials of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.

The security officials immediately escorted the observers back to the scene of the crisis to secure the life of the Cleen official left behind.

11: 10  APC national chairman John Odigie-Oyegun just arrived at his polling unit to cast his vote.

Edo State Deputy Governor, Dr. Pius Odubu and the running mate to the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Philip Shuaibu have also voted in their various polling units.

11.00am Three hours afer voting commenced in the Edo governorship election, the exercise is yet to begin in PU 12/06/07/014, Ujoelen Pry Sch, Esan West as party agents are clashing .

The clash is over the procedure to be adopted following the failure of the card machine to read the finger prints of voters registered in the unit

10.30  The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has alleged that the All Progressive Congress, APC, in connivance with some staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, have written fake results for nine local government areas in the state in order to manipulate the gubernatorial elections in Edo.

This is contained in a statement signed by the Party’s National Publicity Secretary, Prince Dayo Adeyeye and made available to newsmen.

 According to him, “We have become aware that senior members of the All Progressives’ Congress (APC), in collusion with certain staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) have started writing fake & fictitious results as part of their plan to manipulate the Edo State gubernatorial elections which takes place today.”

“We are aware that these APC members are working in collusion with Mrs. Amina Zakari, an INEC national official; Mrs. Imoudu Sule, Edo State INEC PRO; the Delta State REC; and the national Deputy Director of Operations.”

“We are also aware that these officials have distributed millions of Naira to the Local Government Electoral Officers to get them to write false & fictitious results in favour of APC even before votes are cast.”

“It is necessary to warn the Nigerian public that our party will resist any attempts by the ruling party to subvert the will of the people by any engagement in the substitution of electoral materials.”

“We urge all well meaning Nigerians to counsel INEC and the ruling party to refrain from acting in a manner that may lead to the breakdown of law and other.”

“May God bless Edo State. May God bless Nigeria,” he concluded.

Benin City- Edo people will today go the polls to elect a new governor that will succeed Governor Adams Oshiomhole.

19 candidates are vying for the ticket to the Government House. However, main contest is seen to be between Godwin Obaseki of the APC and Andrew Ize-Iyamu of the PDP.

The state has a total of 1,925,105 registered voters; 192 Registration Areas (RAs); 2,627 Polling Units (Pus); and 4,011 Voting Points (VPs).

Voting starts by 8 am and stops at 2pm. Those who are in the queue when it’s 2pm will be allowed to cast their votes.
