National convention: PDP denies change in date

08 August 2016, 17:16

Kaduna - The Ahmed Makarfi faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has denied reports that it has changed the date of its national convention , reports Eagle Online

The convention is scheduled for August 17 in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.

There have doubts over the convention following a court ruling that reaffirmed Ali Modu Sheriif as the authentic National Chairman of the party, reports News 24.

Sheriff is insisting that the convention would be illegal without his approval.

Sheriff had written the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). asking the commission to ignore a letter by the Makarfi-led Caretaker Committee notifying it of the convention.

In the letter dated August 2, 2016, Sheriff told the commission that the Makarfi-led Caretaker Committee is illegal and has no powers under the PDP constitution to convene the party’s National Convention,

But Makarfi on Monday vowed that his faction his going ahead with the convention.

Makarfi spoke when he received the campaign train of a leading candidate for the National Chairman’s seat, Raymond Dokpesi, in his home in Kaduna.

He noted that no court has stopped the party from conducting the convention.
