PDP faction sacks national chairman

13 May 2016, 11:12

Abuja - The crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) deepened on Thursday, with a faction led by Prof. Jerry Gana sacking the Ali Modu Sheriff led National Working Committee (NWC).

The faction, which called itself Concerned PDP Stakeholders held a meeting in Abuja and immediately announced the setting up of a 21-member steering committee to manage the affairs of party.

In a communique signed by former deputy Senate President, Ibrahim Mantu, former Education minister, Professor Tunde Adeniran and, Raymond Dokpesi, the group noted that the purported extension of the tenure of the Chairman and other members of the NWC by the party's National Executive Committee (NEC) was an illegality and, therefore, untenable and contrary to the provision of party's constitution.

The communique read to newsmen by former presidential spokesperson, Dr Doyin Okupe noted that since the extension of the tenure of its national leadership by NEC was illegal, all the activities leading to the convention slated for Port Hacourt would amount to a nullity.

The faction also distanced itself from the zoning arrangement as announced by the zoning committee and called for the cancellation of the May 21 national convention.
