PDP kicks off governorship campaign in Ondo State

20 October 2016, 13:05

Akure - The Ahmed Makarfi-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party has presented the party’s flag to Eyitayo Jegede as the standard bearer of the party for the Ondo governorship election, reports Tribune.

This is in spite of the judgment of the Federal High Court in Abuja which said the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) should accept the nomination of Jimoh Ibrahim as the candidate of the party in the November 2016 gubernatorial election in the state.

Ibrahim according to News 24 is the candidate of the Ali Modu Sheriff's faction of the party.

The Makarfi faction at a rally on Wednesday to inaugurate the campaign of Jegede for the gubernatorial election, declared that any other person presenting himself as the party standard bearer is a counterfeit.

The rally was held at the Democracy Park, in Akure, the state capital

Makarfi, who was represented by the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Dayo Adeyeye, maintained that the party had no other candidate for the election.

Speaking on the occasion, the state governor, Dr Olusegun Mimiko asserted that Jegede was the only recognised governorship candidate of PDP in the state, stressing that,  Ibrahim, who challenged Jegede’s candidature, was not a member of the Ondo PDP and had the right to challenge Jegede’s candidature.

Gov Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State, who also spoke at the rally urged the people to resist rigging through all means, expressing concern on the ability of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to organise a credible election.
