Rivers re-run election holds in October

19 August 2016, 14:36

Port Harcourt -  The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has rescheduled the Rivers State legislative rerun elections to October, reports Vanguard.

INEC National Commissioner, Amina Zakari gave this indication on Thursday during a meeting with political stakeholders in Rivers State.

Zakari said that the elections in Rivers State were not inconclusive but suspended, adding that INEC will only be free for elections after the Edo State governorship election slated for September.

Regretting the circumstances that led to the suspension of the election, she blamed nobody but noted that INEC needed to re-strategise to avoid a repeat of past mistakes.

News 24 reports that the Rivers State legislative rerun has been postponed twice.

The first rerun was held on March 19 but was marred by violence.

The election was rescheduled for July 26 but was again postponed  after hoodlums burnt down the INEC office in Bori local government area of the state.
