Senate concurs with House of Reps to take over Kogi State Assembly

17 March 2016, 17:15

Abuja - The Senate on Thursday concurred with the decision of House of Representatives to take over the Kogi State House Assembly.

This follows the adoption of the report of the committee set up by the upper chamber to look into the crisis.

The Senate equally declared that the impeachment of Speaker by five members of the Assembly is null and void.

The House of Representatives had last week taken over the Kogi State House of Assembly and directed the Inspector General of Police to seal it.

Efforts by Senator Dino Melaye to stop the Senate from concurring with the resolution hit the rock as Senate President, Abubakar Bukola Saraki, ruled him out of order

Melaye had told his colleagues that the Kogi crisis is already in court and  should not be discussed.

Saraki, however, said the report isn't a petition.

He explained that it's a simple concurrence with the House of Representatives.

Saraki noted that the take over of the Kogi Assembly by National Assembly isn't indefinite.

The Senate subsequently directed Solomon Arase, the Inspector General of Police to seal the Kogi State House of Assembly complex till further notice.
