Sheriff inaugurates committee for Edo governorship primary

23 June 2016, 17:44

Abuja - The crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) deepened on Thursday with the inauguration of five committees for the conduct of another primary for the 2016 Edo State governorship election by the faction led Sen. Ali Modu Sheriff, reports Punch.

The Caretaker Committee of the party led by Ahmed Makarfi had on Monday conducted a similar primary.

The exercise produced Osagie Ize-Iyamu as the party’s flag bearer for the Edo State governorship election slated for September 10.

But Sheriff declared the election illegal and unconstitutional, according to News 24

Sheriff in a letter addressed to the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which was co- signed by the factional National Secretary, Wale Oladipo, urged INEC not to give legitimacy to what happened in Edo, saying his faction would conduct a proper primary in the state.

Sheriff on Thursday marched his words with action by setting up a committee to conduct a fresh primary.

He cited Section 50(1) of the PDP constitution which he noted was derived from the provisions of relevant sections of the Constitution and the Electoral Act, as basis for his action.

Sheriff said the fresh primary will hold on Wednesday, June 29 in Benin, the Edo State capital
