Sheriff insists on fresh Edo goverorship primary

28 June 2016, 13:01

Benin City - Self- acclaimed National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ali Modu Sheriff has insisted on going ahead with a fresh Edo governorship primary election, reports Eagle Online.

Sheriff, who spoke on Monday through the Chairman of the Primaries Election Committee, Ebenezer Alab said the exercise would hold on Wednesday as scheduled.

Alabi said Osagie Ize-Iyamu, who emerged as the party’s candidate in the primary conducted on June 20, did so through a National Caretaker Committee that was not backed by PDP’s Constitution.‎

He said the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) would supervise the exercise.

INEC has, however, said it would not monitor the proposed Edo State governorship primaries, reports News 24.

The commission faulted the proposed exercise, noting that it runs contrary of the Electoral Act and the schedule of the timetable for the governorship election.

THe commission said Section 85 of the Electoral Act provides that any party that wishes to hold a convention or primaries shall serve the Commission a 21-day notice.
