Southern Ijaw residents flee over Bayelsa election

08 January 2016, 11:09

Yenagoa - Ahead of Saturday’s governorship rerun election in Southern Ijaw Local Council of Bayelsa State, residents of the area have been fleeing to neighbouring states for fear of violence that may accompany the election, reports Guardian.

The area was turned into a battle ground by political thugs during the December 5 and 6 governorship polls.

The violence necessitated the cancellation of the election in the area.

They fear that security forces deployed in the area will not be able to control an outbreak of violence.

Despite assurances by the security agencies to protect property and lives in the area, the people are not impressed.

To confirm their fears, the Speaker of the state House of Assembly,  Konbowei Benson, was on Thursday reportedly attacked  by political thugs.
