Thugs attack councillors in Edo

04 January 2016, 18:10

Benin City - Suspected political thugs on Monday chased out elected councillors in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State from the council secretariat, reports The Nation.

The councillors were battered in the process.

The thugs invaded the council secretariat to allow the acting chairman of the council, Sweet Ikponmwosa, return to office.

Ikponmwosa was suspended from office by the councilors on Thursday.

She was suspended for her inability to pay salaries, administrative incompetence and failure to account for Internally Generated Revenue since she assumed office.

Since her suspension, her office was locked and armed policemen were drafted to the secretariat to prevent the crisis from escalating.

However, the presence of policemen did not stop the hired political thugs from descending on the councillors.

The thugs descended on the councilors and tore the clothes of the House Leader, Ernest Edebiri, into shreds.
