13 February 2014, 15:03

Abuja - This year’s National Science Quiz will begin on Monday, sponsors of the annual competition announced.

Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) announced the event will be held the Akwa Ibom Hall in Uyo until February 21.

SPDC in partnership with Intel Cooperation and Interswitch Limited sponsor the competition that is scheduled to draw students from different schools across the country.

Bola Oladokpo, Sustainable Development Manager of SPDC, said his company is interested in contributing to the Nigerian economy through science and technology.

He said SPDC has also partnered with cooperate bodies like United Nations Educational and Scientific Organisation (UNESCO) and Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), to encourage young Nigerians to develop interest in science and technology.

“The aim of the partnership is to raise Nigerian scientists who will proffer solutions to some problems in the Country,” Oladokpo said.

Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Science and Technology, Iboro Ekanem, said the state government was hosting this year’s festival of science competition to further develop the capacity of Akwa Ibom students studying science and technology as well as lay a foundation for the promotion of science, which is a necessity to economic development.

He said the state administration had provided conducive learning environment and science equipment to schools across the State as well as built an ICT based library to enhance the learning capacity of students.

The commissioner expressed hope that the State will win, having won in years 2010 and 2012.
