Abuja - About 500 000 Nigerians develop cancer every year, American cancer surgeon Bert Petersen said during a news briefing in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Petersen, a breast cancer specialist, said less than 15% of Nigerians who contract the deadly disease survive due to poor awareness, late detection and lack of treatment.
He also added dark-skinned Africans are three times more likely to contract cancer compared to other races. The manner in which testosterone and oestrogen are metabolised accounts for this susceptibility, he said.
Petersen attended a news briefing addressed by the Ogun State Ministry of Health in Abeokuta.
