FRSC head urges physical fitness

23 December 2013, 09:05

Abuja - The Corps Marshal and Chief Executive of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Osita Chidoka, has urged Nigerians to engage in physical fitness exercise to stay healthy.

He made the call during the 2013 Ike Obosi Keep Fit Exercise held at Obosi, in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The event, which attracted participants from several Fitness Clubs within the neighbouring communities, including the Coal City Fitness Club from, whose members travelled all the way from Enugu State to participate in the exercise, was described by Corps Marshal Chidoka as part of activities aimed at promoting healthy living and safer lifestyles.

The exercise took off early from the main Obosi township market junction and took the participants to Nkpor round about before terminating at the Place of the Eze Obosi, His Majesty, Iweka111, to whom the joggers paid an advocacy visit.

Speaking at the palace of the traditional ruler, who received them in company of some members of Obosi Traditional Council (Nidi-Ichie), the Corps Marshal reiterated that the only way that people could continue to enjoy good health in the face of the diseases of the affluence was engagement in daily physical fitness exercise.

This, he said, would keep them healthy and away from patronising hospital for those ailments he identified as high blood pressure, obesity and diabetics.

“With rampant cases of high blood pressure, diabetics and obesity, which are diseases of the affluent, people must learn to imbibe the culture of daily exercise to keep them physically fit. We have always demonstrated at the FRSC that welfare and safety of all road users are our concern.

"And using the road to jog as we have done today is a practical demonstration of the fact that FRSC does not exist only for motorists, cyclists and motorcycle riders; but all those that use the road, including the pedestrians, who must be protected to use the road safely,” he said.

He said the initiative was being staged in Obosi to demonstrate to the people that the town was free and safe.

“We have to reclaim our community and replicate what we do in the cities.

We have to practically demonstrate that Obosi is on the right track and people here are happily living together in peace and harmony as we demonstrated through the road.”

The Corps Marshal announced that as part of the continuing efforts to demonstrate the spirit of keeping fit and making the road safer for all, he would inaugurate the “Obosi Annual Keep Fit Exercise,” which would be held every December, beginning from next year.

He said would provide opportunity for everyone to take part in the exercise and promote healthy living.
