Improved water services for watermelon producers

15 June 2012, 12:02

Kano - The Minister of  Water Resources, Mrs Sarah Ochekpe, says Kano State and the federal government will collaborate to boost the productionl of watermelon.

Ochekpe, said on Thursday during an inspection tour that it would collaborate with the state government to provide good water services and the needed business environment to aid agricultural activities in the state.

She inspected some watermelon at Karfi Junction, Bunkure Rano, Kano, and said her visit was to ensure that water projects were rehabilitated to aid the sustenance of food security in the country.

"The provision of water in your state will add more value to the growth of your business; it will improve agriculture so that you can farm your products all year round not minding the season.

"And since Kano is a commercial city more agricultural activities would lead to economic boom to enrich your livelihood," she said.

Ochekpe urged the traders to devise high standard methods of processing and packaging fruits for export in line with the federal government’s commitment in promoting export of local food items.

Farmers said they were encouraged to continue in the agricultural business and were happy with the minister's gesture.
