Internet body says local domain sites neglected

09 July 2014, 12:30

Abuja - Thousands of sites registered in the local internet domain name, .ng, are inactive, President of Nigeria Internet Registration Association, Mary Uduma, disclosed.

According to her, so far 60 000 companies and government agencies had registered with the domain name.

She however added that out of these, less than 50 000 were active.

She urged individuals and businesses to take advantage of the local domain name, saying the Domain Name Space (DNS) industry was a multibillion naira business which was yet to be tapped by Nigerians.

“By registering just 1 000 firms or individuals on the .ng domain for just

N100 000 per annum, a Nigerian domain name reseller will make N10 billion income,” Uduma said during a presentation at the Africa Domain Name System Forum in Abuja.

Earlier, ICT Minister, Omobola Johnson said that government had made it compulsory for all government ministries, agencies and departments to transact their businesses online through government portal by September.

She said this would make it easier for Nigerians outside Abuja or the state capitals to connect with officials online without having to be present physically.

She said the approach will reduce corruption and also help to decongest the cities as well as bring governance closer to the people.

Johnson r also said that government has already begun the process for getting Nigeria covered with broadband to make e-governance hitch free.
