Jonathan hails broadband report

31 May 2013, 11:04Emeka Adebanji

Abuja - President Goodluck Jonathan welcomed the National Broadband Strategy and Roadmap saying its implementation will help the country embrace modern communications technology.

On Thursday, Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) Deputy Chairman Dr Ernest Ndukwe, and Communications and Technology Minister, Omobola Johnson, handed Jonathan the report.

"Any country that lags behind in the current age of Information Communications Technology will miss a lot.

"That is why we have created a separate Ministry of Communications Technology to facilitate the establishment of the best digital communications infrastructure in Nigeria and optimise our adoption of global best practices in the use of information and communications technology," Jonathan said.

He praised the presidential committee for the report, which he said would be adopted by government for implementation.

Jonathan said he hoped to see the country integrate into the digital communications age when the broadband implementation was concluded.

Nigeria, which boasts main undersea fibre optic cables comprising the West Africa Cable System (WACS), MainOne and Nigerian Telecommunications Limited (NITEL) among others, has given priority to revolutionised communication both on data and voice services.
