Popular taxi app launches in Nigeria

25 July 2013, 09:07Henry Ifeanyi

Lagos - Rocket Internet, the technology startup incubator, has expanded its online taxi booking services to Nigeria with the launch of Easy Taxi, the mobile taxi application.

The launch of the mobile taxi apps in Lagos is part of the Germany company's ongoing expansion plans to Asia, Africa and the Middle East.

Speaking about the Lagos launch, Sacha Poignonnec, co-Chief Executive Officer of the Africa Internet Holding, the parent company, said the Easy Taxi app would ensure a fast and reliable traveling experience.

The Easy Taxi app helps customers  call a taxi with a single tap on your smartphone. The app is free.

"It is convincing in every single aspect-fast, safe and working in a very smooth way. It fulfills all the needs of the African market. We see an amazing opportunity and we will expand fast to all the markets where we are present today with the startups of Africa Internet Holding," Sacha said.
The company aims to launch Easy Taxi in more African countries in the upcoming weeks.

Also speaking at the launch in Lagos, Dennis Wang, Head of International Expansion at Rocket Internet, said Easy Taxi's growth had been phenomenal since 2011 when it connected taxi drivers and passengers in Brazil.

"The app now has more than 1, 5 million downloads and more than 45 000 taxi drivers in the network. We want to bring this success to other attractive markets and we see high potential in many Asian and African countries,” he added.

A month ago, Easy Taxi secured $15 million to finance its expansion.
