Pokemon Go creator suffers hack attack

01 August 2016, 13:15

Johannesburg - Cyber attackers, claiming to work for an online security company, have breached the Twitter account of John Hanke who is the CEO of Niantic - the firm that created the gaming hit Pokemon Go.

Hanke’s Twitter account on Sunday and Monday fired off a series of tweets, highlighting the hack.

The attackers, who say they are part of the OurMine hacking team, tweeted that the hack was “for Brazil.”

Brazil is among a list of countries where Pokemon Go is not yet officially available.

OurMine, though, describes itself as “an elite hacker group known for many hacks showing vulnerabilities in major systems”.

Hanke's hacked tweets suggested that OurMine was “testing” Hanke’s security and that the company has even offered to upgrade his security.

As part of its ‘marketing’ strategy, OurMine on its website says it gives back account access to its hacking targets and then provides the target with “security tips”.

Meanwhile, the hackers said that Hanke’s “password was too easy” in that he used the phrase "nopass".

OurMine last month also claimed to be behind outages on the Pokemon Go network.
