Akpeyi ready to replace Enyeama

10 June 2015, 10:07

Abuja - Super Eagles goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi has reacted to Vincent Enyeama's call to be his replacement, and has told News24 Nigeria he is ready to take up the mantle.

Captain Vincent Enyeama had mentioned Akpeyi as a possible replacement when he eventually retires after the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations, and Akpeyi, while insisting he's ready to become Nigeria's number one goalkeeper, says he still has a lot to learn from the more experienced Enyeama.

"I know Enyeama is like a big boss to me and left for him alone I know he wishes to see me there as the number one.

"If he says I'm ready, I will say it's been my dream but I still have a lot to learn from him before he leaves and that is if the coaches see me as the next man to take over.

"I have been working hard and also praying that someday God should make me be in between the sticks and not just there, but to stand out.

"Destiny and hard work has kept me here till date even when I have played from the bench all through.

"By God's grace I have been in the national team right from the under 17 that went to Finland in 2003.
