Alaba injury setback for Munich

06 November 2014, 14:32

MUNICH - Bayern Munich could be without defender David Alaba for the rest of the year after the Austria international suffered a knee injury in Wednesday's Champions League victory over AS Roma.

Alaba is set to be further examined Thursday on suspected ligament damage.

Coach Pep Guardiola said he feared Alaba would be out for "two or three months."

"I hope he can return after Christmas. His flexibility makes him very important for us," the Spanish coach said.

Alaba set up the first goal by Franck Ribery in the 2-0 victory at the Allianz Arena before limping off in the 81st minute.

The victory means Bayern have won Champions League Group E with two games to spare while stretching their unbeaten run to 16 games, 13 of them victories.

Veteran Bayern striker Claudio Pizarro is also expected to be out for several weeks after suffering a thigh injury in training Monday, the club said.
