Anene delivers Amkar from Zenit defeat

22 September 2015, 10:17

Abuja - A second half strike from Chuma Anene rescued a point for Amkar Perm in a Russian Premier League week nine encounter against highly-fancied Zenit St. Petersburg at the Petrovskiy Stadion on Sunday.

Anene, Brian Idowu and Izunna Uzochukwu were the Nigerians dressed on match-day by the away side.

The duo of Anene and Idowu were handed starters shirts while Izunna was benched for the entire match duration.

UEFA Champions League campaigners, Zenit St. Petersburg were the first off the block as they scored in the 10th minute through Artem Dzyuba.

Amkar fought like wounded lions in the second half and got their reward six minutes after the hour mark when Anene netted the leveller for them.

Anene made way for Aleksandr Salugin twenty minutes to the end of the entertaining top-flight match.

Fegor Ogude failed to make the cut for the match as he is still nursing an injury.

An elated Anene exclusively spoke to News24 on Monday stating his joy at helping his team earn a draw at home.

“I'm so excited netting the equalizer for my team. It was a great feeling,” Anene told News24.

“It was a match that we weren't favoured to even get a draw, but I like the spirit we showed despite the array of stars the hosts paraded.”
