Coach in Spain suspected of sexual abuse of female footballers

21 November 2013, 20:10

Madrid - Spanish police said Thursday they arrested a five-a-side football coach in Rivas Vaciamadrid, on the outskirts of Madrid, suspected of sexually abusing seven female players, most of them minors.

The 38-year-old, who has not been named, is accused of abusing his position as coach to lure the girls into receiving massages.

According to a police statement, the man "took advantage of his role as coach and his supposed knowledge of sporting massages to commit the sexual abuse".

All the victims were aged between 12 and 17 at the time of the abuse, except in one case where the victim was already 18.

The statement added that there is "possibly a greater number of players that have suffered sexual abuse at the hands of the same coach".

The arrest comes at the end of an investigation that began in early this month after the victims reported alleged abuse that took place in July.

The man, who had coached teams in the Madrid region for 18 years and also worked with the under-17 and under-21 Madrid select sides of women's five-a-side football, has been remanded in custody.
