Del Bosque: South Africa defeat our worst

20 November 2013, 15:32

Abuja - Following their shock defeat to South Africa on Tuesday night, Spain coach Vicente del Bosque said it was their worst performance under his reign.

The Spanish suffered a 1-0 loss to lowly rated Bafana Bafana at the FNB Stadium courtesy of a Bernard Parker strike.

The Kaizer Chiefs goal-poacher did brilliantly to compose himself inside the box after collecting a through-ball from Oupa Manyisa before flicking it over the already committed Victor Valdes in the 56th minute.

The 62-year-old Del Bosque afterwards shared his disappointment with Spanish national television station Cuatro.

"It could be (our worst recent performance)," Del Bosque said.

"I think we can even say the defeat was well deserved.

"We started well but little by little they started to open us up and we allowed them time to counter-attack.

"We came out with good intentions and fought to the end to find an equaliser so I can't complain about the players' attitude.

"They (South Africa) got better as the game went on though."

It was Spain’s first ever defeat by South Africa after winning the first three meetings.

Bafana’s next match will be at the FNB Stadium against 2014 World Cup hosts Brazil in March next year.
