England book Chantilly base for Euro 2016

07 September 2015, 20:38

Watford - England manager Roy Hodgson revealed on Monday that his squad will be based in Chantilly, 38 kilometres (24 miles) northeast of Paris, for next year's European Championship in France.

"It's a base we spent a long time preparing for in the sense that we looked at a lot of places in France," Hodgson told a press conference in Watford.

"We had a clear set of criteria we wanted to fulfil: proximity to training ground, type of town, proximity to airport, and quite a few others.

"When we looked around, we eventually thought Chantilly was the one which best fulfilled those criteria."

The Football Association said that England would stay at the Auberge du Jeu de Paume hotel and use the training facilities of local amateur team US Chantilly, which will be modernised ahead of the tournament.

England qualified for Euro 2016 with three games to spare after winning 6-0 in San Marino on Saturday, when Wayne Rooney scored his 49th international goal to tie Bobby Charlton's all-time scoring record.

Hodgson's side face Switzerland at Wembley on Tuesday before wrapping up Group E with games against Estonia and Lithuania in October.
