Football fans clash over Mikel’s award loss

10 January 2014, 11:10Israel Ojoko

Lagos - Football fans have expressed contrary opinions after seeing Super Eagles midfielder, John Obi Mikel lose the 2013 Glo CAF Award to Ivory Coast international, Yaya Toure.

A host of fans had tipped Mikel to lift the prize after Nigeria won the Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa and booked a ticket to the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

Reactions on News24 Nigeria Facebook page on Friday shows how unhappy many people are seeing Toure beating Mikel to the Award. But some believe the decision to crown Toure instead was fair.

Idowu Irumekhai: Am not surprised...CAF awards always favours d French speaking countries...even jay jay magic could not win d award...were as he won dat of BBC twice.

Falayi Muyiwa: If Mikel is a Cameroon citizen he should have won.

Iddrisu Halidu: John Obi MiKel is the right player to be crown. CAF is full of partiality.

Okoro Moses: Mikel won nation cup and Europa cup last season and perform well and it was given to Yaya who did not win anything.

Alezflez Kpugi's: I fink Yaya deserve it, despite his country fail 2 win d nation's cup....Yaya is a very skillful player & his performance this season has been really outstanding, . . .so tell me, what more do need?

Matthias Okata: Glo pls stop sponsoring caf awards Mikel has been denied his right too bad

Charles Uwaezuoke: The awards were fair enough when it began, but lost its criteria for earning the awards when the CAF African best was announced. If Cannavaro won the world best after captaining Italy to the 2006 world cup, then why is African best decided on mere entertainment and not achievement

Alabi Seal Oluwasegun: i want to know what is & how were they nominated, was it base on Nations cup performance or Club or Goals? If its nation cup, Mikel is best to Yaya. if its club, Mikel won Europa.so what is Yaya achievement last year plz.

Da B'shop: Even in dis page yaya still carries more vote. I think Nigerian are becoming very reasonable. Yaya is d king of africa 2013

Fagbemi Adebanji Taiwo: Hmmm! But sentiments or patriotism apart, Yaya Toure had a brilliant individual performance as well as he was excellent as a "team player", scoring important goals for both club nd national teams in 2013 (even when his teams were having bad days, Yaya stood out). On the other hand, Mikel had a wonderful season as a "team player" only; individually, he was not outstanding and to worsen the case, he was goal shy as usual. Though, having been an AFCON champion nd winning UCL n Europa Cups, I would have given him the award. Whichever way, both are quality players any day, but tonight, Yaya Toure is African King and I say a very big CONGRATULATIONS!
