Paris — Former France goalkeeper Dominique Dropsy has died. He was 63.

His former club Bordeaux said in a statement that Dropsy, who had 17 caps with France from 1978-81 and played one game at the 1978 World Cup, died on Wednesday morning after fighting a "long disease."

Dropsy had discovered in 2011 that he was suffering from leukemia.

After starting his professional career with Valenciennes, Dropsy spent 11 seasons at Strasbourg, where he won the French league title in 1979.

Dropsy joined Bordeaux in 1984, winning two league titles, two French Cups and reaching the European Cup semifinal in 1985.

He ended his career in 1989 after featuring in 596 top-flight matches and became Bordeaux goalkeeper coach.

Bordeaux paid tribute to "a legend of the club that passed away."
