France coach Deschamps urges use of video

02 October 2014, 19:30

Paris - France coach Didier Deschamps has called for the introduction of video technology to decide whether a foul has been committed inside or outside the penalty area.

Goal-line technology is already in use in major international tournaments and in the Premier League to help referees decide whether the ball has crossed the line, but Deschamps now wants the use of technology extended to stop officials making wrong penalty calls.

"Goal-line technology is a very good thing, because whether a goal is valid or not can have very important consequences," he said on Thursday.

"We could use video to see if a foul was committed outside or inside the box, because the consequences are not the same once the referee has whistled.

However, he added: "Even with video, we are not always able to properly detect if it's the good decision, so an element of liberty should be kept in the game."

FIFA president Sepp Blatter indicated at the world governing body's congress in Sao Paulo in June that he would be in favour of allowing coaches to use video to contest a referee's decision during a game.
