Germany will not boycott Russia 2018

03 September 2014, 16:07

Madrid - The German government is not considering calling for a boycott of the 2018 World Cup in Russia due to the political situation in Ukraine, a spokesman said Wednesday.

Government spokesman Steffen Seibert said that with the World Cup in Russia still four years away, it was not a question for discussion at this time.

And German foreign office spokesman Martin Schaefer said that though the European Union was considering further sanctions against Russia, these were not related to the World Cup.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Spanish newspaper El Pais reported the European Commission was considering a boycott as another potential sanction against Russia for interfering in the conflict in eastern Ukraine.

According to the newspaper, the boycott was one of various measures on a list which was to be submitted to member states.

The report came a day after FIFA president Joseph Blatter, speaking in Kitzbuehel, Austria, reiterated his support for the World Cup being in Russia.

"We are not questioning the World Cup in Russia," he said, adding that boycotts have "never achieved anything."
