Jonathan wishes Eagles good luck

07 June 2013, 10:03Augustine Osayande

Abuja – President Goodluck Jonathan pledged the Government’s support of the Super Eagles in its quest to qualify for next year’s FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

He wished the team well as it left Abuja for a crucial encounter away to Namibia at the weekend.

“Government would provide all necessary assistance to set the country on the path of achieving the objective of qualifying,” Jonathan said.

Nigeria are favourites to qualify for a second successive World Cup from a group that also includes Malawi and Kenya.

They have a healthy lead in Group F ahead of the penultimate round of matches.

The Super Eagles earlier this week enhanced their chances with a 1-0 win away to Kenya in a match that was brought forward to enable Nigeria to prepare for next week’s Confederations Cup scheduled for Brazil.

Jonathan described the vital win as heart-warming.

Qualifying for the world’s biggest football tournament will cap a dramatic turnaround in the Super Eagles’ fortunes.

In February they were crowned the Orange Africa Cup of Nations after the tournament held in South Africa.
