Abuja - Nigeria defender Leon Balogun has spoken of his excitement at joining German Bundesliga side, Mainz 05 on a free transfer from Darmstadt 98.
The 26-year old signed a three-year contract with the Bundesliga outfit on Friday, barely a week after representing Nigeria in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.
And he has spoken of his delight at joining the ‘Zero Fivers’.
“Mit der Unterschrift beim @mainz05en schlage ich jetzt einen neuen Weg ein. Ich bin sehr glücklich,” he tweeted, which loosely means “I propose a new way with the signature in the @mainz05en now. I am very happy.”
The right-back played for Darmstadt 98 in the Bundesliga 2 last season, helping them gain promotion to the Bundesliga, but failed to renew his contract with them after it expired.
Balogun started his career with Hertha Berlin, where he played for their youth teams, before going to play for several other German clubs.
He made his international debut for Nigeria in a friendly against Mexico in March of 2014, but suffered an injury shortly after his introduction.
He made his second appearance for the Super Eagles in a 1-0 loss to Uganda in a friendly in Uyo in March of this year, but his first competitive game was a 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Chad last weekend.
