Maradona back's Messi criticisism

16 July 2015, 07:15

Cape Town - Diego Maradona has entered the debate on Lionel Messi's form with the Argetine national team.

The Telegraph report that Diego Maradona has backed those who have criticised Lionel Messi's performances for the national team.

Messi finished on the losing side as Chile won the 2015 Copa America. He scored just one goal in six appearances in contrast to the stellar season the multiple Ballon d'Or winner had in Spain with Barcelona.

Messi scored 60 goals in all competitions for the Catalan giants, leaving many puzzled at why he cannot convert club form when he dons the blue and white of Argentina.

"It's logical that he comes in for flak, it's easy to explain." Maradona told Argentine sports paper, Olé.

"We've got the best player in the world, who goes and scores four goals against Real Sociedad, then he comes here and doesn't touch the ball".

"You're left saying to yourself 'Dammit, are you Argentinian or Swedish?"

The former World Cup winner and Argentina coach also added that the only way he (Messi) will improve for the national team is by coming in for criticism.
