Abuja - Sunday Mba, the Super Eagles’ 2013 African Nations Cup (AFCON) hero,
may not be available for the forthcoming African Nations
Championship (CHAN), an official said on Thursday in Abuja.
The team’s media officer, Ben Alaiya, who disclosed this in a
statement, quoted head coach Stephen Keshi as having expressed doubts
about the player’s availability.
"Keshi said on Thursday that Mba was on his way to France to join
Bastia, the French league side which first indicated interest in the
player after the Nations Cup triumph,’’ the statement said.
It added that the player could leave camp as early as Friday, as he
was not one of the players listed for the friendly game in Port Harcourt
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the home-based Super Eagles are billed to face a Rivers selected side.
The CHAN event, the third since 2009, is for players featuring for clubs on the continent.
Meanwhile, the statement also disclosed that the process of trimming
the team had began in earnest on Thursday with the departure from camp
of three players.
"The players are Sunshine Stars’ Kingsley Onome, Bendel Insurance’s Bello Ikeleji and Eric Kwame of Plateau United," it said.
The statement said also that more players were being expected to be
decamped after the game in Port Harcourt and after Monday’s match
against Kano Pillars.
