Muntari aids Milan nine-goal thriller

15 September 2014, 13:51

PARIS - Out-of-favour Ghana midfielder Sulley Muntari helped Milan edge Parma 5-4 in a Italian Serie A thriller at the weekend.

Muntari was banished from the World Cup squad for ill discipline in Brazil and ignored for recent 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers

Cameroonian Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, Tunisian Sami Allagui and Gabonese Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored in the German Bundesliga.

RIYAD MARHEZ (Leicester)

The Algeria winger had a fine start to the season when he impressed against title-contenders Chelsea and Arsenal, but was rendered all but anonymous as Leicester won 1-0 at Stoke and was replaced at half-time.

The Nigeria forward, on loan from Chelsea, had a completely different match to Marhez, but unluckily ended on the losing team. Dynamic and forceful on the right wing, he shot wide on three occasions but also had two good chances. However, a lack of precision cost him and Stoke dear.

Well-marshalled by the Everton defence, the Nigeria forward struggled to break clear during West Brom's 2-0 home defeat at The Hawthorns. He has now gone three games without a goal since arriving from Dynamo Kiev.

CHEICK TIOTE (Newcastle)

The Ivory Coast midfielder was one of several Newcastle players who struggled during a 4-0 loss at Southampton. They were already 2-0 down when Tiote came off the bench at half-time, but he was unable to turn the tide.

Algeria midfielder Feghouli was surprisingly dropped to the bench by Valencia coach Nuno Espirito Santo for Los Che's 3-1 win over Espanyol, but he still made an impact as a second-half substitute, teeing up Paco Alcacer to fire the home the hosts' third goal.

Cameroonian Kameni continues to keep Mexican World Cup star Guillermo Ochoa out of the Malaga side as he kept his second clean sheet in three La Liga games this season in an uninspiring 0-0 home draw with Levante.

Muntari started on the left of Nigel De Jong in Milan's three-man midfield as the Rossoneri travelled to Parma looking to make it two wins from two. At the end of a pulsating 90 minutes, which saw a player sent off from each side, Milan emerged 5-4 winners to top Serie A.

After playing all 90 minutes in Juve's opening win of the season against Chievo last week, Asamoah was an unused substitute for Massimiliano Allegri's side on their way to a 2-0 home win over Udinese, which left the Bianconeri on the same points as leaders Milan.

With Roma in Champions League action this week, coach Rudi Garcia opted to leave Gervinho on the bench for most of a 1-0 win at promoted Empoli. The Ivorian replaced Adem Ljajic in the 81st minute, meaning he is a likely starter at the Olympic Stadium on Wednesday when the Giallorossi host CSKA Moscow.

The 26-year-old Mozambique defender moved to Rennes in mid-year from Nacional of Portugal and has immediately settled. He scored twice in the 6-2 win over Evian last month before helping the Brittany outfit keep clean sheets in drawing at Saint-Etienne and beating Caen. On Saturday, Mexer and Rennes frustrated Paris Saint-Germain, holding the champions to a 1-1 draw.

It has been a difficult week for the powerful 25-year-old France-born defender. He made his Ivory Coast debut in the Elephants' 4-1 hammering by Cameroon in Africa Cup of Nations qualifying and his own goal condemned Lorient to a 1-0 defeat at Montpellier.

The giant Malian netted in his country's 2-0 Cup of Nations qualifying win over Malawi last weekend, and continued his scoring form for his club. However, his late strike -- his third in Ligue 1 this season -- was not enough to stop Bordeaux going down 2-1 at Guingamp and surrendering top place to Lille.

The Cameroonian led the Schalke attack and threatened Yann Sommer's goal on a couple of occasions before making it 2-1 with a well-taken penalty. That was early in the second half, after which Borussia Moenchengladbach pulled away to win 4-1.

The Ghana midfielder made an unhappy return to the Schalke starting XI as his side were hammered 4-1 by Gladbach and he got a second-half booking.

Allagui's first game since rejoining Mainz on loan came against the club he just left, Hertha Berlin. The Tunisian attacker scored the second goal in a 3-1 victory.

The Gabon striker started on the bench, but did not take long to make an impact when he came on for the last 16 minutes. He raced clear to put Dortmund 3-0 up in a game they eventually won 3-1 against visiting Freiburg.
