Lagos - The League Management Committee (LMC) on Thursday said that the potentials of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) had yet to be fully maximised.
LMC Chairman, Nduka Irabor, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the NPFL was worth over N3 billion.
He added that the LMC would do all it could to ensure that structures that would change the face of the league were put in place.
"First, you must see football at the elite level as a very commercial enterprise, through which individuals and corporate organisations seek to announce their presence.
"One way to achieve visibility is to seek to sponsor viable club sides. In doing so, they get recognised and it is money, Qatar Foundation, for instance, is affiliated to Barcelona for commercial purposes.
"It is a symbiotic relationship because there is something that goes into the club, either in charity form or as a commercial earning. We are striving to build our league to that standard," Irabor said.
He added that there was need for the league to generate its own revenue.
The LMC Chairman commended Guinness Nigeria Plc., makers of the Harp brand, for its recent partnerships with some NPFL clubs.
NAN reports that five clubs in the NPFL recently secured sponsorship deals with Harp.
The clubs are Rangers International FC of Enugu, Heartland FC of Owerri, Dolphins FC of Port Harcourt, Sunshine Stars of Akure and Lobi Stars of Makurdi.
"I was happy to hear that Harp as a brand has decided to sponsor five clubs in the league. I do not know as at now what the financial cost is, but it costs money.
"We should be talking about clubs having shirt sponsorship deals that can be worth about N50 million. You take that as a benchmark and multiply it by 20 club sides.
"This is just at the rudimentary level, so saying that the league is worth more than N3 billion was not out of place. When a match is on, for instance, there are usually cameras everywhere," the chairman added.
He stressed that the league could generate more funds from advert placements by private organisations and individuals..
"There are usually messages scrolling, people pay for those adverts and there is a huge earning that comes from that. Multiply it by about 10 stadia where league matches are played and check the commercial value," he added.
