NPL board suspends Baribote

11 December 2012, 09:01

Abuja -  The Nigeria Premier League (NPL) Board on Monday suspended its Chairman, Victor Baribote, to enable the three-man committee investigating the crisis between the board and club owners complete its assignment.

The suspension is contained in a communique signed by Joe Amene, Chairman, Media Committee of the board, after its emergency meeting in Abuja

“The board of the NPL has asked the chairman, Victor Baribote, to step aside until the committee finishes its assignment.

“Meanwhile, the Vice Chairman, Alhaji Shehu Gusau, will assume duty as acting chairman pending the outcome of the investigation by the committee,'' he said.

The committee is headed by Mr Leye Adepoju, Executive Board Member NFF; and has Ade Ojeikere, a sports journalist as a member, while a representative of the Premier League Clubs, Kasali Obanoyen will serve as secretary.

It has three weeks to submit its report.

The board called off its congress scheduled to hold on Dec.11, due to the situation.

“The NPL Board shall convene its congress in line with the statutory provisions of the NPL Statutes and has already forwarded to the NFF, the proposed materials for the congress.

“This includes the NPL technical report for the 2011/2012 league season and the proposed date for the 2012/2013 season.

Therefore, the planned congress is called off and the inconveniences caused are highly regretted,'' the board said.

The board expressed appreciation for the intervention of NFA in insisting on compliance with the NPL statutes on the crisis.

The league club owners had at a recent meeting in Abuja, passed a vote of no confidence on the chairman following a crisis that rocked the elite competition.
