Obafemi Martins hailed by coach, teammate

14 September 2015, 13:23

Seattle - Obafemi Martins has been praised by stand - in Seattle Sounders coach Brian Schmetzer and teammate Andreas Ivanschitz following his team's 1 - 1 draw with San Jose Earthquakes in the MLS on Sunday morning.

Sounders were on the brink of suffering their 14th loss of the season after Fatai Alashe's 70th minute strike, but Martins had other ideas, leveling the scoreline eight minutes before the final whistle to keep alive their hopes of qualifying for the play - offs.

‘‘He’s a natural finisher, and it was a very, very good, world-class finish,'' Coach Brian Schmetzer told reporters.

Andreas Ivanschitz added: ‘‘(Martins) is a fantastic striker. He’s waiting for those opportunities. He’s very experienced, and he scores many goals for us.

''He’s a key player for us, so I’m very happy that he was there to make the goal.''

The draw means Seattle Sounders are unbeaten in their last three games in Major League Soccer and occupy the fourth position in the Western Conference standings ahead of their visit to Vancouver next Sunday.

Of the 12 goals Obafemi Martins has netted in the league in 2015, three have won the Goal of the Week accolade.
