Obi Mikel makes first start of the season

12 September 2015, 18:34

Abuja - John Obi Mikel was handed his first start of this season by manager Jose Mourinho in Chelsea's 3 - 1 loss to Everton in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.

If the final three games of last season are not included in the mix, considering that Chelsea had already wrapped up the title by then, the Nigeria international was last named in the starting XI on December 28, 2014 in the 1 - 1 draw with Southampton.

With the likes of Willian struggling for form , Obi Mikel was the beneficiary when Mourinho announced his squad for the fifth round as the Brazilian found himself on the substitutes bench.

Before making way for Kennedy ten minutes after the interval, the Super Eagles star had set up Nemanja Matic's stunning strike from 30 yards in the 36th minute to bring the scoreline to 2 - 1 in favour of Everton.

According to the statisticians at whoscored.com, Mikel completed 97.4% of the 38 passes he attempted , or in other words, only one pass he made failed to get to his teammate.

Nigeria manager Sunday Oliseh stated during the week that the influential midfielder will be considered for the national team in future games provided he gets playing opportunities at Chelsea.
