Abuja - Sunshine Stars FC of Akure has attributed its 1-0 victory over El Kanemi Warriors of Maiduguri in week 33 of the ongoing Globacom League to determination.
Auta Philips, Sunshine Stars attacker, made the statement shortly after the match on Wednesday at the Akure Township Stadium.
"Our determination spurs from the fact that we had to win the match to improve our standing on the league table.
"This is a critical period in the league; no team is willing to go on relegation. If we cannot win the league at least we can remain in the premiership.
"The victory has moved us a bit further up on the league’s log and we are determined to win our next match too at home against Sharks FC of Port Harcourt,’’ Philips said.
El Kanemi's Musa Musa, in the 29th minute, handled Philips’ homebound shot in the vital area.
Sunshine winger Christian Omeruo, converted the penalty in the 31st minute which later happened to be the only goal of the match.
"Our determination paid off; the fans expected a good football and we needed to do our best to improve our points on the log.
"Our position no doubt improved with this result and we will continue to look at ways to improve on our performance,’’ Philips said.
Sunshine now sits 10th on the league’s log with 44 points from 33 matches.
The team will on Sept. 22 in Akure meet Sharks FC of Port Harcourt in week 34 of the league.
