London - English Premier League club Sunderland says midfielder Adam Johnson has been suspended after he was arrested on suspicion of sexual activity with a girl under the age of 16.
The 27-year-old England international was due to join up with the Sunderland squad on Monday before a Premier League game at Hull on Tuesday.

But Sunderland said in a statement: "Adam Johnson has been suspended from the club, pending the outcome of a police investigation."
Johnson's arrest was first reported by The Sun newspaper and the BBC.
Asked about the arrest, police in Durham, north east England said Monday: "A 27-year-old man was arrested earlier today on suspicion of sexual activity with a girl under 16."
