UEFA probe Partizan over anti-Semite banner

19 September 2014, 20:31

Paris - UEFA have opened disciplinary proceedings against Partizan Belgrade after a number of their fans displayed an anti-Semitic banner during Thursday's Europa League tie with Tottenham.

A huge banner bearing the words "Only Jews and Pussies" was displayed throughout the opening group match in the Serbian capital which ended in a goalless draw.

North London club Tottenham have long enjoyed close links with the Jewish community.

"Disciplinary proceedings have been opened against FK Partizan for racist behaviour of their supporters, field invasions by supporters, setting-off of fireworks and use of laser pointer," UEFA said in a statement Friday.

"The case will be dealt by the UEFA control, ethics and disciplinary body on October 3," European football's governing body added.

Partizan condemned the actions of their fans as a "mindless act".

"FC Partizan resolutely disavows the anti-Semitic banner displayed," a statement on the club's website read.

"The message displayed on that banner is completely opposite to the preferences and opinions of almost all citizens of Serbia and Partizan fans.

"We apologise to everyone who found themselves insulted and upset by this banner."

Partizan were kicked out of the 2007 UEFA Cup for rioting during a first qualifying round first-leg clash at Zrinjski Mostar.
