Buhari lauds weekend sporting achievements

Abuja - President Muhammadu Buhari has congratulated Wellington Jighere and the women’s Under-20 female football team for emerging the world scrabble champion and qualifying for the Women's World Cup tournament respectively.

Jighere, the first champion from Africa, defeated Lewis Mackay of Cambridge of England, by 448 points to 426 to win the scrabble championship which 450 players from round the world competed for.

“I called to rejoice with you over your performance. You have done the country proud, and we are very happy. Please, pass my congratulations to other members of Team Nigeria,” Buhari wrote in a message to Jighere.

She hailed the qualification of the women’s junior soccer team, the Falconets who beat the Basetsana of South Africa 1-0 on Sunday in an away game.

The side qualified 3-1 on aggregate.

“This is a clear case of the indomitable Nigerian spirit. Such will soon be evident in all aspects of our national life,” Buhari said.
