Captain of football club dies in car accident

21 December 2016, 14:33

Istanbul - Sehmus Ozer, the captain of Turkey's second division football side Amedspor from the mainly Kurdish city of Diyarbakir, has died in a car accident, the club announced on Wednesday.

"You were a beautiful person, a great captain. Your legacy is in safe hands," the club said in a statement, without giving details on the circumstances of the accident.

The club said its Turkish Cup match scheduled for Thursday against top flight Super Lig team Genclerbirligi had been postponed as a result of the death of Ozer, 36.

Amedspor are enjoying a strong season and are contenders for promotion to the first division, lying in fourth place. The second division is the third flight of Turkish football after the first division and the top flight Super Lig.

Much loved by residents of Diyarbakir, the team in 2014 changed its name to use Amed, the Kurdish name for the city.
